GARREAU SHINES AS SINGAPORE FOOTBALL CLUB STAY TOP
French starlet Anthony Garreau ensured Singapore Football Club’s (SFC) winning streak continued, on Wednesday evening. Garreau was at the heart of everything good for SFC, as he capped his tidy performance with a thunderous 30-yard freekick, during a hard-fought 2-0 triumph over an obstinate German All-Stars team.
SFC, whilst handing debuts to Collins Mbeutcha in defense and ‘goal monsters’ Aleks Duric and Matt Zatto, started brightly. Unfortunately, the ‘Beauty Queens’ soon slowed and lost their regular passing rhythm whilst experimenting with a number of new formations. The first half ended 0-0 with little to write home about, for either team.
The second half saw a refreshed starting line up that Colin Kaepernick would have firmly approved of. The introduction of ‘Carribean King’ Akil Pompey to shore up the back, whilst the swashbuckling trio of Liam Shotton, Robert Ezakior and Mahmoud Gomda Abdul-Samad all came in to attack.
The deadlock was finally broken by Matt Hulen in the 55th minute. An act of petulance, from a previously very well drilled German midfield, led to an SFC freekick. The “Duwamps Dynamo” ensured it was spectacularly punished, as his sweetly struck ‘goal strike’ smashed into the net from 25 yards out.
Leading 1-0 SFC continued to probe, but with little further success. Finally Garreau, having been the lynchpin to all of the home team’s attacking moves, stepped up to secure all three points with resounding aplomb. His freekick, from all of 30 yards, flew into the back of the net leaving a despairing German keeper no chance.
This was not Singapore Football Club’s smoothest performance, but a clean sheet and some tidy performances from the debutants will have pleased their Brains Trust.
Thank you to the German All-Stars for a competitive match.
